Brief Historical Overview
Brazil was one of the first developing countries to institutionalize space activities through the establishment of government organizations in the early 1960s.
The first Brazilian Astronaut, tenant-colonel Marcos Pontes was sent to the ISS in the Centenary Mission performing microgravity experiments on the year 2006.
Profiting from the magnetic equator, the logistic support and the region low pluviometric indicators, in the Northeast state of Rio Grande do Norte on 1965 Brazil’s first launching center was created – the Centro de Lançamento da Barreira do Inferno (CLBI – Barrier of Hell Launch Center). Today still in activity tracking Ariane launch vehicles, together with the Korou Launching Center, performing experiments of Aeronautic Command, Army and Navy interests and selling launchings and tracking of sub-orbital rockets to organizations worldwide.
Created on 1971, INPE – National Institute of Space Research (Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais) has as strategic objectives to respond to national challenges with science, technology and innovation, to develop leadership in science and technology, to provide infra-structure to the scientific and technological development among others. Detailed timeline and INPE creation history at: http://www.inpe.br/institucional/historia.php
On 1982 the construction of the Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara (CLA – Alcântara Launching Center) began, being the closest launching base to the equator, giving a significant advantage in launching geosynchronous satellites.
Since 1994, created by Law# 8.854, AEB (Agência Espacial Brasileira / Brazilian Space Agency) is the civilian public organism subordinated to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, to coordinate the development of space activities of national interest.
On October 2003 Ukraine and Brasil signed a “Long-Term Cooperation in Utilization of the Cyclone-4 Launch Vehicle at the Alcântara Launching Center”, which established the first international legal framework for the commercialization of space launches from the Alcântara Launching Center. The bi-national public company Alcântara Cyclone Space (ACS) was officially inaugurated on December 2007 – strengthening the opportunity to turn Brazil one of the leading launching service providers.
Having as main international partners the USA, China, Germany, France, Ukraine and Argentina – recently expanding the cooperation network with India, Italy and others countries.
Started to provide free satellite images via internet on the year 2004 – to the benefit of mankind, with transparency, international cooperation and peaceful purposes Brazilian National Space Policy drive us to achieve the key-player position our own geopolitical, territorial and cultural outstanding magnitudes ask for.
