SGAC General Assembly Held Successfully

25 January 2012

The Space Generation Advisory Council held its annual General Assembly (GA) on January 12. With the participation of around 40 SGAC National Points of Contact and Executive members from all over the world and moderated by SGAC Chair, Michael Brett, the GA lasted just over two hours.

To begin, Michael Brett and SGAC Co-Chair Catherine Doldirina provided a brief welcoming address and expressed gratitude to those present for their time and contributions throughout the year.

The assembly moved on with the quorum determination, followed by the adoption of the GA Agenda and a 2011 review by Executive Director, Ariane Cornell, and Deputy Executive Director, Andrea Jaime. Some of the highlights of last year included:

  • SGAC was actively represented in the UN COPUOS meetings as well as the subcommittees where SGAC’s progress, activities and recommendations were presented.
  • New members were added to SGAC Advisory and Honorary Boards.
  • The revenue from fund raising increased by 50%.
  • The Space Generation Congress (SGC) was a grand success, with 16 high level speakers including the heads of 4 space agencies. The SGC attendance increased by 30% over 2011 with 130 delegates from 42 countries.
  • SGAC gave away record 35 scholarships worth of 27,000 Euros and increased scholarship spends by 75%, fulfilling SGAC's mandate to bring in young participants from around the world.
  • SGAC tied partnerships with several organisations and institutions around the world in 2011.
  • SGAC members represented the organisation in 18 conferences across the world.

The GA then continued to the formal discussion of 11 proposed changes to SGAC's statutes and 20 proposed changes to SGAC's bylaws. Most of the proposed changes were voted for and the modifications were implemented to the original statutes and bylaws, respectively.
