SGAC Poland A lot of space activity is going on in Poland as the country is about to join ESA as early as 2012. Poland is already getting a boost in space budgeted funds – so you can expect to see a lot of developments in the upcoming months.
Young Space Activities Overview in Poland There are many space projects happening in Poland where participation of the younger generation is encouraged. SGAC is here to connect you to all of them and to each other. The Warsaw University of Technology, the Wroclaw University of Technology and the AGH University of Science and Technology from Krakow have recently secured funding for their students to take part in the first student Moon orbiter project (ESMO). In addition, these universities are working on their own CubeSat project: PW-Sat is planned to be launched in 2011. Students from Warsaw University also participate in various ESA sponsored projects like REXUS/BEXUS, SCOPE 2.0 and the University Rover Challenge (in association with the Polish chapter of the Mars Society). In the upcoming years it is planned to organize the University Rover Challenge in Poland, a first for Europe. This is due to the success of the Polish team, which won 3rd prize during the last URC.
Country-Specific Events in 2011 2011 features the 400th anniversary of the birth of astronomer Jan Hevelius. The city of Gdansk, the birthplace of the astronomer, will be the center of the anniversary event. Exhibitions, lectures and even a Lunar Module simulator are part of the set. Read more at http://www.janheweliusz.pl/. Warsaw will be the center of the 15th edition of the space picnic. Last year’s event was attended by more than 200,000 visitors and is the biggest science popularization event in central Europe. See you there in Warsaw on the 28th of May. Interesting Web Links for the Young Generation in Poland Last but not least, Poland has a very active internet community centered around the pages “astronautyka.org” and the “kosmonauta.net” portal. Astronautyka.org features users that take part in professional space missions and posts very interesting, up-to-date and valuable information. The forum has also created professional documentation covering various space missions. Even more impressive, in April 2011 they are about to launch their first self-made balloon mission intending to take pictures of the Earth’s curvature. SGAC is your connection to these activities as well as to the participants to help grow the Polish space network…join us!
