Second Round Survey

Hope I haven't jumped the gun posting a new topic. This one seemed ill suited in other areas and I figured it needs a special focus. Also I was torn between this forum section and 'Survey Processing' if you think it should be over there thats fine.

Seems like we have had a serious dip in activity of late. I can't recall seeing any new posts within the last three days and we need to get the second segment of the survey out as soon as possible to get maximum feedback. Some ideas for round two have already been discussed in the output thread but while some good ideas have been expressed no conclusion has been reached and more importantly no plan of action has been taken. We did a good job with getting the first survery results processed by assigning specific responsibilities. We need to get such specific assigned goals again to move it along. It was easier in that case because we knew exactly what we wanted to do. A definite decision on what we want has yet to be made. Lets make the necessary decisions and get organized. I look forward to hearing what you want to do with the next part.

No problem with starting a new topic. Indeed, thank you. I have noticed the dip in activity myself, and we are coming up against some deadlines soon. What do you think we can do to get things remotivated?

Reactivation

The difficulty of maintaining steady activity seems the be the single greatest challenge this project has put forth. I've tried some things already including a mass emailing (one response) IMs (one significant response and one very short) and repeatedly ending my posts with requests for input. It seems to be a problem for most of the Congress projects as well. Maybe we could put an inquiry in to the couple that have higher activity rates. What I think would be most effective right now though would be to just go ahead and make some of the decisions that need to be made to go forward. Activity begets activity on message boards and I think at least Bee and Quantum would likely respond. That will allow us to get some work done and some activity on the boards. Ill talk it over with Quantum on IM tomorrow and post the decisions. Once those are up we can go from there. I haven't done this prior as I had hoped to make it a group decision but I guess if you don't voice your opinions you don't get a vote.

Hey Another,

I have been in hiding, busy with the ISU 'Why the Moon' Symposium. It ends today - so you will be hearing from me here in a few hours.

Draft suggestions posted on survey processing forum

Following the suggestion of Another and Sheng, I am trying to reinvirogate some of the discussions here. It helped previously when we had a template against which we were working. For this reason, I am posting a draft suggestion for the next round of survey. Please, feel free to comment, critise and help improve it. I hope it is OK for me to post a new forum and suggest a draft in the hope that it will help us get through to the deadlines.

I really hope that this does not offend anyone here, I have only posted examples (which I have definitely left sounding rather basic so that we can all contribute to them)

"Problems" could be something we focus on during the second round survey/report.
On one hand, we could see from the round 1 results that many entries are concerning about the problems we are facing or will meet during our space exploration activities. On the other hand, we can not forget that the subject of the symposium is about “Solutions to Earthly Problems”.
So I think that we may first select or summarize some important problems or issues as a start, and it would be even better if we then get corresponding solutions.
Any suggestions or better ideas?

Dear All, My sincerest

Dear All,
My sincerest apologies that after promising acting in a few hours, I had to stay away longer as I have caught a mixture of flu and tonsilitus.

Sheng,
You state a valid point, but looking once again at the symposium website - I quote:
"The tremendous potential offered by access to space can be used to address many important human issues and concerns- scientific, technological, and societal."
And further, The goals of the workshop are stated as:

* convergence of technologies
* social and theological implications of the results of expected discoveries
* viability of space colonization and space mining to solve societal problems on the Earth

I suggest we keep the next survey in accordance with the goals that are stated as a starting point for the workshop:
"The role of space exploration to solve critical societal needs such as mining of minerals from the moon or asteroids and 3He to address energy needs

The use of spacebased tools in disaster mitigation, telemedicine, and Earth resources

Astronomical observations from the far side of the moon

Ensuring the peaceful use of outer space

Space colonization: Is it needed? What is needed? What are some of the implications?

Social, theological, philosophical, and public policy implications of finding Earth-like planets and the discovery (or not) of extraterrestrial life

The role of space for commercial applications (e.g., communication base, space tourism and entertainment)"

- We can present percentages and quotes of the first round that fit this category and ask subsequent category question (3-5 max) so that we can accumulate the youth opinion.

Hi bee!

Personally, I rather believe that the second round survey needs to be more of an extension of the First Round. I mean, personally (it's just my opinion) it seems like from your post, you're suggesting kind of a departure from the First Round of the surveys.

I believe that we should take the most popular results of the First Round survey, and be more specific and specialized from there.

For instance, obviously one of the more popular topics for the survey was to build a base on the moon. Now, for the second round, I believe that we should ask "with what technology should we build a moon base, why a moon base is so important, which countries should participate in building the moon base" and so on.

Again, huge apologies for being away for so long. And I PROMISE to be more active from here on.
