UN COPUOS Recommendations

Hi, all;

I am curious to know what the status is on the UN COPUOS work listed as the primary goal of the research team. The next COPUOS session is coming up in early June.

Do we have anything prepared? Are we going to use the results of the 50-year vision conference? What needs to be completed?

Is UN-COPUOS on the list?

Marcia, i am wondering if COPUOS is on our agenda? But i would certainly like to see it on the agenda. Especially with the increases in the US defense budget for space weapons related activity. China and India to a lesser also have started their military space programs.

The recent Chinese ASAT test adds urgency to the issue.

COPUOS is definitely on our agenda (according to the Project Team Description), but I have yet to hear back from anyone as to what exactly we are doing to support it at this point. I'll email (again) and see what is up. :)

COPUOS

Hey everyone!

Thanks Marcia for getting this forum back on track to what it should be!

Sorry for making this introduction a little late, but I would like to introduce myself.

I am Kat Coderre, and am one of the moderators for this forum as well as a co-lead for the SGAC Project Research Team. I live in Houston, TX, USA and am currently working on the CEV Orion Project with Lockheed Martin. I was at the SGC 2006 in Valencia, and am happy to work with all of you in the forums and at Hyderabad this year.

Yes, COPUOS (Committe On the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) input IS on our agenda...and here is what is going on:

Our main COPUOS input is focusing on the 50 year vision for space exploration and links to the information can be found here:
http://spacegeneration.org/index.php?q=node/254

The SGAC has decided to use the theme "Visions for the Next 50 Years" as its central theme for the rest of the year, and as our main output to space events.

The COPUOS is going to be held from June 6th-16th and there will be representatives from the SGAC there (currently trying to figure out who to send), presenting this 50 year vision. Some work does need to be done, such as creating a powerpoint specifically for COPUOS, creating a new flyer (found here: http://spacegeneration.org/files/Downloads195/50yearvisions/Youth_Vision... ), all for the short term. We are looking at using the initial flyer and data as our "preliminary visions," and then use those as a guideline to an in depth review of the data. And then working through a short term plan (say 5 years or so) and then to the 50 year plan.

So what I would like you all to do is read through the output from the 50 Year Space Conference and provide some input. I'm leaving this rather open right now...just want to see what your thoughts are. Try to think about what our next steps can be; whether it be the next round of survey questions, or some other form of communication and collaboration.

Thats all for now!

Fiftieth Session

Hello,
Do we have an idea about the agenda of the UNCOPUOS session?

I think the powerpoint presentation to UNCOPUOS should be more about 'space governance' and 'international cooperation'. Once we have an opinion that is derived from the conference that can be used to direct the long term vision statements.

Great to have you aboard!

Hey There Research Team!

My name is Agnieszka and I am the SGAC Executive Officer based in our headquarters in Vienna, Austria. I am also the head of our delegation to COPUOS so I am very pleased to see that you want to work on the input to the upcoming COPUOS session in June. The agenda is still not available but I wouldn't worry about it too much as we are already on it and indeed we will make a statement about the 50 year vision for space exploration as well as (hopefully) have a technical presentation. The output that came out of Boston conference was received very well world wide and it is something we want and we should brag about. So, your input to our statement is greatly needed and appreciated. PowerPoint presentation would be also an excellent idea. I am excited to have you aboard and if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.

Cheers!

I'd be happy to help, too.

I'd be happy to help, too. Even though I'm not officially on this team.

I did do some work on the 50 Year visions survey and presentation, so any questions, feel free to ask me.

Hello

Is there a way in which we can help with the presentation? I do Engineering and Public Policy with a focus on Space Weapons. Let me know if i can help. (I can give some idea about India's stance on space weapons. I worked with the Indian missile defense agency).

What's the status?

Hi Guys!

I hope you are all doing well. As you know COPUOS starts June 6th so very soon. Will you have the input and presentation by then? I need to know if I can rely on you. I know that you are all busy; therefore, please give me heads up on the ststus of your work. Our ststement must be lest then 10 minutes; thus this doesn't have to be very long. Also in the power point presentation it would be good to include couple of slides, which would introduce SGAC to the rest.

Here is the agenda for this upcoming session: http://www.unoosa.org/pdf/limited/l/AC105_L267E.pdf

Thank You for all your help!

I am seeing that there are different topics.... I think we can hit the "Use of space-derived geospatial data for sustainable development" one....

COPUOS has a goal of peaceful use, doesn't it? I wish to add a topic in the "other matters" zone on communicating and combining with ETs. Means for peaceful use of outer space, we are not likely to fight with ET.s (LOL, I love galactica... It looks soooooo nice :-S ), are we?? Rather we should communicate with 'em, tell 'em we are friends, and combine our science with their's. Even if the ET.s are not intelligent NOW, we take up the duty of their conservation, so that in course of evolution, someday there comes the intelligent ones, and our descendants can establish peace with 'em.

Comments please.

Last minute support with the presentation

Hi team,

Sorry for the late introduction. I am an artist/performer and human factors researcher involved in postdoc research spanning advanced life support and performance behaviour in extreme environments. I also write some copy on social gov. ethics and philosophy. Perhaps I can help with some the presentation in the final hour.

I am travelling between Australia and Tawian over the coming weeks but I am available online to provide some support to custom the visual design and ensure the slides are eye-catching and cohesive. Given the various constraints on our time, I would prefer at least a day or two notice and suggest that someone send me the presentation as a whole so that I can work on it as one unified document.

Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

Lts stick to 50 years of space exploration

Hi!

I sent you guys agenda so you could get familiar with this session of COPUOS. We have already decided on what we will present so lets stick to it. The research team ought to work on the input and presentation in regards to the 50 years of Space Exploration - pretty much what was presented at the Boston University Conference. As I said before we also would like to briefly introduce SGAC to those who don't now us in this. It must be less than 10 minutes so lets not make this too complicated and lets stick to the topic. We can introduce new topics for the next COPUOS but this year has already been decided on. Kat, can you coordinate this and make sure people know what they are working on?

Thanks!

Here is a link to the

Here is a link to the recommendations set forth by the presenters of the Boston University conference: http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=22430

That is very relevant because two of the organization members: Chris Boshuizen and Shi Heng were in attendance at this particular session and helped to come up with the recommendations.

I hope this helps with your presentation. :-)

Also, I would be glad to create a flyer for your presentation. Let me know. I could have the design done by tomorrow.

Let me know what you guys would use the flyer for, also. Would it be for advertising your presentation?

COPUOS Input

Okay everyone, we need to get working on this and fast. I am sending out a blanket email to all the Research Team Participants, but I am going to post as well.

I need a few people to help me out with the presentation, to be completed by June 6th. Here is what we need to do:

1. Powerpoint presentation about the results of the 50 year conference:
- brief intro on the SGAC
- BU conference results
- less than 10 minutes in length
2. A flyer would be wonderful
- One to possibly advertise the presentation
- Possibly another to highlight our key results/50 year vision
3. Any other ideas relating to the 50 year space vision would be greatly appreciated!

The highlights of the 50 year conference can be found here:

http://spacegeneration.org/index.php?q=node/254

Please respond here, and/or email me at kathleen.coderre@gmail.com as soon as possible so we can get working on this and make a great presentation!

Thanks!

Kat

Like I said, I'll be glad to

Like I said, I'll be glad to design the flyer. Who would actually print them?

Also, in an above post I included a link to the final output of the Boston University symposium. In it the invited speakers of the conference outline their recommendations for the next 50 years of space. SGAC's Chris Boshuizen and Shi Heng participated in this session.

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=22430 Hopefully this will help for the power point and actual presentation at COPUOS.

Okay, go ahead and make the flyer. Don't worry about the printing just yet (I'll work on that). Just let me know when it is done and I can get it posted on this site.

Thanks for the great link too...it will prove helpful!

Ok. I posted a flyer design

Ok. I posted a flyer design in the file share section for this group. Thoughts/comments please?

And should I make a back for this flyer and put the information of the results of the survey on it?

Flyer

Looks good. Only one minor comment of maybe capitalizing the "P" in project.

Make a back to it...we can always choose to print only the front if we so desire, but I think its great to have the information on it.
