IMAX Adventure!
The following is from SpaceGen's Loretta
Hidalgo:
I am now
back on dry land and I want to share with you some of the
adventures that a whole band of scientists and filmmakers recently had aboard
the Russian Research Vessel "Academic Keldysh" (it is the largest
research vessel in the world).
Jim Cameron, wanted to create a 3D IMAX film that takes people (including me
and Kevin!) to hydrothermal vent sites at the bottom of the ocean. These sea
floor "volcanoes" and the creatures living on them were only discovered in
1977. In the movie we talk about the extreme lifeforms that live there and what
they may mean for scientists looking for life elsewhere in the galaxy.
The best part is that Kevin and I got to dive multiple times to the bottom
of the ocean. Once we even got to dive together on our deepest dive yet, 3500m! All
in all we spent a month on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and a month on the East Pacific
Rise.
It was amazing to be an aquanaut, and to explore the watery 2/3rds of our
little orb. We didn't see land for 4 weeks! While I was out there I really
got to experience what an AMAZING planet we are graced with. It was
an incredible experience and I wanted to share it with you. To let you
know that exploration is alive and well and that there are always new
boundaries to press! I will let you know more as we get closer to the
release date!
